Brewing with the AeroPress

Quick, easy and very forgiving, the AeroPress makes cups that hold their own against machines many times the price. There's plenty of room to experiment, but here are two easy ways to start.

What you'll need

Step by step

Method

  1. Double the filtersPut two paper filters in the cap. The extra resistance helps the extraction.
  2. Add coffee and waterAdd 15g of medium-fine coffee, then pour in 225g of water just off the boil. Stir gently so every ground is wet.
  3. Seal itPush the plunger 1 to 2cm into the top of the chamber. This creates a vacuum and stops it dripping.
  4. Wait, then pressAfter 2 minutes, press down gently and steadily. Stop as soon as you hear air hissing out. Pressing further pulls out bitter flavours.
  5. Enjoy, then rinseGive the AeroPress a quick clean while it's still warm.

Another way

Try it espresso-style

For a stronger, more concentrated cup. A higher coffee-to-water ratio gives a creamier mouthfeel, even when you top it up with water afterwards.

  1. Double the filtersAs above, use two paper filters in the cap.
  2. Add coffee and waterAdd 25g of finely ground coffee and 90 to 100g of water just off the boil. Stir well so everything is submerged.
  3. Seal itPush the plunger 1 to 2cm into the top. Skip this if you have a pressure attachment.
  4. Press firmlyAfter 1 minute 30 seconds, press down firmly. The force helps build a crema on top.
  5. Make it yoursTop up with hot water to your strength, or add milk for a cafe-style cup.

Troubleshooting

Dial it in

  • Bitter? You may be pressing past the hiss. Stop as soon as you hear air.
  • Want it stronger? Use the espresso-style method, or add a little more coffee.
  • Use AeroPress Micro-Filters for the paper filters.

The coffee

Which coffee?

We recommend our blends for the AeroPress. The single origins we roast for espresso are great in it too, especially in the espresso-style method.
