Description

This coffee is grown by smallholder farms in Tharaka Nithi County, on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya. The farmers bring their cherries to the Kathinthiuku Factory, where the lot is processed.

The trees are SL28, Ruiru 11 and Batian, grown at 1,500 to 1,700 metres. The cherries are handpicked and sorted, then pulped, fermented, washed and dried in the sun on raised beds.

Golden raisin comes first, then apricot, with a bright passionfruit finish. We roast it for filter.

Built for filter. Our recommended recipe, a starting point, not a rulebook.

Coffee questions

Before you ask.

What does single origin mean?

Coffee from one place, rather than a blend of several. One country, often one region or one farm, so you taste where it comes from.

Why does the range change?

Coffee is a harvest crop, so single origins come and go through the year. When one lot runs out, the next takes its place.

Espresso or filter?

Most of our single origins work either way, and the Brew guide tab has a recipe for each. Where a lot is built for filter, the Brew guide says so.

How fresh is it?

We roast in Sydney, and orders usually go out within a few days of roasting. Every bag carries a best before date, set one year from the roast date.

How should I store it?

Squeeze out the air, seal the bag, and keep it somewhere cool and dark, away from the stove and the sun. Skip the fridge. Moisture does coffee no favours.
