Description

In the early 1900s, Leon Christianakis's grandparents moved from Greece to Tanzania and planted coffee in the Arusha region. Leon grew up on the family farm, built a career in pharmacy in the UK, then came back to coffee with his wife, Aideen.

In 2007 they took over Acacia Hills Estate, and Leon later bought Tembo Tembo Estate next door. Both sit on the slopes of Mount Oldeani, near Karatu, at up to 1,900 metres. They focus on soil health, shade management and careful processing.

It's washed, from mixed local varieties grown at 1,820 to 1,900 metres. Plum comes first, then apricot, with a red velvet sweetness on the finish. We roast it for filter.

Built for filter. Our recommended recipe, a starting point, not a rulebook.

Coffee questions

Before you ask.

What does single origin mean?

Coffee from one place, rather than a blend of several. One country, often one region or one farm, so you taste where it comes from.

Why does the range change?

Coffee is a harvest crop, so single origins come and go through the year. When one lot runs out, the next takes its place.

Espresso or filter?

Most of our single origins work either way, and the Brew guide tab has a recipe for each. Where a lot is built for filter, the Brew guide says so.

How fresh is it?

We roast in Sydney, and orders usually go out within a few days of roasting. Every bag carries a best before date, set one year from the roast date.

How should I store it?

Squeeze out the air, seal the bag, and keep it somewhere cool and dark, away from the stove and the sun. Skip the fridge. Moisture does coffee no favours.
